Location scouting

Example 1: https://ukfilmlocation.com/locations/london-period-house-for-filming-with-vintage-styling-LON2652 - retro, vintage, links well with time period
Example 2: https://ukfilmlocation.com/locations/spacious-period-home-filming-location-LON4461 -retro, good size garden
Example 3: https://ukfilmlocation.com/locations/large-detached-period-house-film-location-SE4282 - vintage, good size garden + (bonus) kitchen could be used for Story 2
Example 4: https://www.shootfactory.co.uk/uk-locations/vanners-farm-berkshire-rg20/- old fashioned, but well kept, lovely garden

Overall, when conducting my research I found very limited information as most properties require an inquiry to share their prices and it would depend on things such as, how many days the house would be used for, however most home owners state that their house could be hired for around £500 a day.

I had to look at a few similar houses on different websites just to get idea of the prices as most places require a phone call or email address to get a quote from them
One of the houses similar to my chosen one was (1), and the prices for end of July time was £2,940 for the 2 days, which sounded more accurate for the size and quality of my chosen house.
Another similar house I found was (2) with the price being £700 for both nights, seeming significantly lower than the first price.

After the research I conducted I found it very difficult to find a set price for most properties I looked at I decided to settle on a budget in the middle and spend no more than £1,000 on a day of shooting for the location.

Cost Summary (notes + final prices)

  • Graphic designer+ animator to build tree scene at start as well as fireflies and any of the animations needed. Average price for a graphic designer is £25 per hour, and if we take into account the graphic designs would be working alongside me, just for additional help, we can estimate no more than 4-5 hours of work on their side bringing it up to $100-£125.  The price for an animator as seen on the list wouldn’t go above £350 as the animation would fall under the 'Animated illustartion' and would be less than 30 seconds long in total- a simple small tree with one branch with fireflies around it eventually building up to a whole tree in the end. Overall the price for both would be £475 less or more, depending on the hours of work needed from the graphic designer.
  • EDIT   After establishing my storyboard, and final ideas, I realised that the production would only benefit from an animator instead of a graphic designer, as the skills required to make the animation of the 'family tree with the fireflies' as well as the 'golden siluethes' of the grandma and the second brother in the end, could be completed by a single animator. However the work required would cost, as found for 2019, "The average cost for a 60 second explainer video is $7,972. (That’s around €6,500 or £5,700 for our international readers, at the time of writing.)" (1). My other option is to look for a freelance artist, who after conduction my research would charge an average of £15-£20 an hour (2). If we consider that the animation required would be no longer than 50 seconds long, with some repetition, I suggest a 15 hour work period for it, that would take my cost to £225-£300 which would make it considerably cheaper. for more information on the Crew go to "Crew on set"
  • For costumes/50's props i found a few options- the first studio, only has female designs on their galery with prices starting at £89 for a full outfit (3). https://www.themetraders.com/bespoke-services/ I also found this company that works in set building as well as costumes and textiles, which could help for the set up in the 50's in the house as well as with the clothing of the 2 brothers in the 50's. For my project I will use this example which, considering I would need 2 costumes/clothing designs from the 50s for the young brothers, would cost £178
  • For the actors I found the cost to be "around $50-400 an hour for an actor. Or you can also think of it as something like $250 per actor per (8 hour day), in a market which is priced at the lower end of the spectrum." (4) as well as "The average salary for an Actor is £10.30 per hour in the United Kingdom. Salary estimates are based on 82 salaries submitted anonymously to Indeed by Actor employees, users, and collected from past and present job advertisements on Indeed in the past 36 months." (5)  I also found freelance actors with an average price range between £12 to £95 an hour. As the figures were so diverese I estimated that I would need actors in the span of 2 days (1 day for shooting, second day as a backup on any footage) 8 hours each day, which would vary between £195 a day per actor (£12 x 8hours x 2days) and £1520 a day per actor( £95 x 8hours x 2days). for more information go to 'Actors/Cast'
  • For the cameras i would also need 2 lenses one 70mm for close up shoots of faces and people and a classic 50mm for the mid shots and normal takes. I would also use 2 cameras and 2 different angles to film at all times, so in the end result I have more footage to work with. (6) (look at 'equipment list' for more information)

-story 1- two brothers' story when they were young playing football, forward to now days 1 of them seating looking at old photos, with his grandsons who play football on console. he goes out and starts playing football, his grandsons go out after him, all play together. We then see a montage in pictures of the grandad with his brother play in the same backyard .

-story 2- a young boy and his dad, living alone, no other family hes aware of. He plays in a school play, no family in the audience except his dad, we then see him home as he watches an advert, about the app with a happy family, he then downloads the app and we follow as he realises he has a big extended family. Boy is then on stage again but this time, his family is there cheering for him. OR
Family is appearing in the audience in gold smiling cheering

-story 3- little girl and her mother baking cookies. The little girl gets sad as her nan had passed away. Gilr goes to bed sad. Her mom sees the app on advert/ or hears about it on radio. The next day we see a pillow/ blanket fort/ fairy-lights, as the little girl walks in and finds her mother there with a laptop, pictures and albums around. They sit together as she shows her stories of her nans' past. Stories 'appear' around them as her nan appears and all see the montage.

Video ends as all 'gold' spirits, turn back to fire-flights and make the whole golden family tree.

               STORYBOARD

-dark screen sky, stars turn into fireflies, a small seed/firefly turns into a small tree with one branch -golden, there are fireflies  around it taking us to the first branch- the first story (10sec)
  • 1st story- old grain video-recording , 2 brothers playing football in backyard, 1950s set up, mother laughing(20 sec)→ zoom in extreme close up of eyes to one of them then zoom out takes us to now days set up, from zoom out of eyes of the 2 brothers sitting together in a black and white picture on same backyard when they were little, to mid shot one of the brothers holding the picture smiling, in his 60s (45 sec), in his chair, hears the laughter, camera pans over to 2 young boys playing football on a console, then jump back to the man as he stands up and walks out on the same backyard from the start (55 sec), boys looking curious, look out the window see their grandad playing with a football, doing tricks etc. camera is stationary/ fixed on floor, mid shot of boys holding controllers as they leave them, jumping up, running outside laughing. (1min. 10sec) camera slowly moves up to the pictures on the table of the 2 brothers 50 years ago playing football, happy, moving to the window (fly on the wall) looking over same backyard, grandsons playing with their grandad, laughing (1min. 25sec)
-zoom in album on table and out of story back to the tree, the story is now in a bubble as fireflies move up to another branch (5 sec)
  • NO USE 2nd story- a young boy with his father waiting for his picture to be taken, looking sad, people around him are laughing, boys his age with their mothers, fathers and siblings while he's alone with his father(10 sec). Camera flash to boy on stage, with a costume, playing in a school play, camera look over the audience, to his father and empty seat on his right. camera jumps back to boy, sounds of people talking in distance.(20 sec) Back at their house boy is still wearing the costume seating in front of tv, as an advert of a happy family starts- mother is hugging her son, relatives are laughing, blowing candles , big birthday party- jump back to boy holding his phone dowloading the app, once downloaded (35 sec), pictures/ videos 'explode' around him of his mother, his extended family, grandparents, cousins etc (45 sec). Camera pans over to other side of the room, boy is now seating in front of a computer, now happy, talking, laughing with someone  over video-chat (52 sec). Camera pans again now to another shcool play, as boy comes up on scene, looking over the audience once again, as the camera mid shot on his father dollies out to show the whole row as now  his relatives, are appearing out of nowhere, golden silueths, waving, smiling (1 min. 2 sec). Jump back to boy smiling, voices are now clear as he recites his lines. At the end as everyone on stage bow, the audience( attention is focused on his family) goes on their feet applauding . jump cut to close up of boys face smiling, bright eyes to extreme close up of his eyes as screen goes to black (1 min. 15 sec)         -fireflies appear again out of the bubble, and move to a branch on the opposite side (5 sec)
  • 3rd story- zoom on a book titled 'nana's secret cookies recipe' dolly out we are in a kitchen watching a little girl and her mother making cookies, laughing mixing dough. Little girl stops halfway looks over at the book and touches the top where the word 'nana' is, sad eyes(tears?). Camera jumps to mother seeing her little girl, smiles sadly. Jump cut to little girls room as she is in bed hugging the same recipes book. (NO USE Mother turnes lights out, walk out, sits on couch, hands over her face, long sight, tearing up. On tv the same advert of happy family starts, grandparents hugging grandchildren etc. mother smiles, stands up). Jump cut to next day, girl wakes up walks over to living room and sees a pillow fortress. Goes in to see her mother, pillows ,fairy lights, cookies and different albums and pictures around. little girls runs over - montage of mother hugging little girl, eating cookies, showing pictures of grandmother, when she was young, to her appearing next to them watching too, smiling, laughing together, pictures floating around.

-at the end fireflies move back to reveal a whole tree with many story bubbles on the same tree (10 sec)
the slogan "Connecting generation" comes on
EDIT
The 1st and 2nd story would be linked together to justify the idea of 'family' and 'connecting generations' even more, by- using the same houses' kitchen, backyard and living room for the filming, that wouldnt be seen until the end of 2nd story, when they all get together.

EDIT
In 2nd story, the daughter will first fall asleep on the couch instead, hugging the recepy book, then walk into the living room from story 1 instead where her mother would have set up the cookies and family albums. Then the grandad from Story1 would be just on his way in from the garden with the 2 young boys, they all sit together looking over family albums and eating cookies, with the 'golden' image of the grandma again appearing as if with them, as well as the second brother, all together. (20 sec animation required)

Overall animation time required: min45 seconds to max60 seconds
